I signed up for Kids off the couch a month or two ago and I love it. My favorite was the dinosaur one because we did it at the same time that they were learning about dinosaurs at school. We went to the dinosaur museum and my girls were thrilled to tell their teachers about it. I think it helped get more out of what they were learning.

City Savvy is cool. We have done similiar things going geo-caching and it is nice to pick place on a map and explore.

Just subscribed.I have a preschooler crazy about animals, creepy crawlers n the like and I think the bat adventure would be a good teacher as we haven't done bats yet

I like the idea of taking kids to outdoor concerts. I know there are some in our town, but we've never gone. My husband and I are musical and we want to expose our children to a variety of music in hopes that they 'catch the love' like we did.

The fact that it's an outside concert is great because I don't think kids feel as 'trapped' as they would in a concert hall. They would feel more free to wiggle, lay on a blanket...and after all it really is a fun adventure!

Even though I have a boy, I think my favorite post is the preventing Princess Mania (as I see it all around me everyday). Girls need to see the alternative princesses out there and that they don't need Prince Charming to do everything for them. I've enjoyed many books about unconventional "princesses" and I hope that they can inspire other girls too.

Visiting A Bat Exhibit or Learning More About Bats At Home would be awesome! I saw a bat flight years ago in NM and would love to have my daughter see something similar.

I like the 15 minute rule when watching a dvd with my son. It works like a charm.

I love the post Treasure The Good Times where you go on a scavenger hunt. Any kid loves treasure maps and the thought of adventure. What a fun way to get them thinking and off the couch.

My favorite is the endangered planet one i love learning about our planet recently i took an environmental science class and i could not believe all the crazy stuff humans are doing to our planet it's insane and those poor animals are victims too :(
it's the best book because i actually learn more information about our endangered planet, as surprising as that is sad though :(

I liked your post, "The Best Holiday Gift Ever." This is the perfect time of year to get the kids involved in charity work, be it donating money or time. The holidays are such a great time to start these traditions as a family. (I subscribed!)

I just signed up. This looks like a great way to incorporate more fun learning into the girls lives.

The butterfly activities would be great. We went to a local butterfly garden at the beginning of Spring and wanted more ways to increase her learning after visiting but wasn't sure what else we could do.

I look forward to more adventures in my inbox. Thanks.

I don't know about the *best*, but our kids were really intrigued by the Stellaluna book and movie, and your post on that gave us some ideas for expanding it.

I can't get your blog to come up on Google Reader. Does it have an RSS feed?

Brian said...

Ah, figured out the RSS thing - had to put kidsoffthecouch.blogspot.com. I was leaving out the blogspot.

I've been getting your newsletter for awhile & really enjoy it! One blog post I enjoyed was ~ http://kidsoffthecouch.blogspot.com/2008/09/bringing-history-to-life-movies-that.html

Love it when I can teach the kids while they are being entertained as well. Sinks in better!

My favorite adventure would be
Don't Just Grin and Bear It with Arctic Tale + Save a Polar Bear and The Planet. We have been talking a lot about global warming with our daughter and this would be a good way to incorporate more learning with a film! Love your website!

The Popcorn Night Adventure/Masters with Stellaluna looks like fun. My kids loved that book. In fact we still have it. It would be fun to do things to celebrate the book.

Stellaluna was perfect timing! (of course you planned it that way because of the season, but still!) My son was just asking about bats yesterday and then I stumbled across this and got it from the library. So cute! I just signed up for the newsletter, this should be SO much fun, I love exploring different things with kids, they have such cool insight sometimes.

I just subscribed to the newsletter! I have 2 sons who love adventure! We have been on a Bat adventure (though I am sure they'd love another!) I thought the Boo AT the ZOO at the Bronx Zoo sounded like fun.

It has prompted me to look up our own zoo, of which we have a membership for, and see what they have going on!!

Thanks!

teach your daughter that you make your own path in life - don't sit around for that prince to sweep you off your feet. Make your own dreams happen instead of waiting for someone to make them happen for you. This is a very important message to give to our daughters. Although it is fun to play princess and every little girl IS a princess, we need to teach them to be self sufficient.

I just signed up for Kids off the Couch and am so ticled about it. I read over a few of the adventures and am looking forward to Who's in the Kitchen?

One of my favorite mom/kiddo activities is getting them involved in the kitchen. There are always age appropriate tasks that each child can help with, everything from the little ones dumping already measured ingredients into a bowl to the older ones helping actually prep the food.

We have the movie Ratatouille, so Ratatouille and homemade pizza that we make as a family is exactly the family night activity that we would all enjoy. Next weekend, Ratatouille and Pizza. Love it!

Thanks for offering this wonderful giveaway! Good luck to everyone!

Thanks for the blog! I signed up for the newsletter too! I have to say the animal acres would be GREAT! I am an animal lover and aren't most kids as well. It's so important to get kids involved with things they like so they will "want" to creative and fun things.

I am brand new to your site, and very excited to have found it! I just searched through your archives, and I think the first adventure I'll try with my daughter is Who's In the Kitchen? She likes to watch me cook, but I rarely relinquish control. I like the idea of tying it to a movie she knows and enjoys. What an inspiration, thanks!

It would have to be U.S.A. Popcorn Adventure #73 “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa”. All kids just love going to the zoo and watching the animals.

I am going to use this site often. I love these ideas for adventures. I really love the U.S.A. Popcorn Adventure #10 - Winged Wonder The Butterfly + Butterfly Garden. I really think my little girl would love the movie and the butterfly garden. It would introduce her to these types off adventures in an easy way.

I am so glad that I found your blog. I love it. I am a new subscriber. I was happy to see that in Your Primary Colors adventure that you encouraged taking kids to the polls. I have done that and I think that encourages kids to vote when they get older.

The Chocolate Revolution is a great idea. I am going to do that my kids. It would a great winter activity.
I love that fact that you tie in activity with books and a movie. Super!!

This is my first visit to your site. I have signed up for your newsletter. I looked at several of your past blog posts. It is hard to pick a "best" one. Each one deals with a different issue but the common thread is the great information that you give: in one there were "red flags" to watch out for; in another great conversation starters, etc. For this contest I will go ahead and choose Artic Tale and save a Polar Bear and The Planet. I have eight grandchildren of varying ages and this material is appropriate and necessary for them. I like how you have: "Zoom in for a closer look" with links to click on. You pack a lot of information into a small amount of space.

I signed up. The corn maze adventure sounds awesome! There aren't any that I know of close by, but since I live in a rural area maybe I could organize a way to get one started. My kids would love it!

Ooh, this is a doozy of a giveaway :) I'm a first time visitor, and being around kids everyday and trying to keep them entertained and inquisitive makes this site extremely valuable! The adventures are divine. I looked at many before deciding upon the Animal Crackers/Art Phobic adventure. I will definitely screen the classic Marx Bros. film for the kiddies and see firsthand how they like it! And, being an artist by trade, I love museums and am thrilled when I run into kids on field trips and overhearing their comments on pieces I have seen many times over. They have a fresh perspective and it helps me see art through their eyes. Culture should NOT be a dirty word! It's shared by everyone, but for kids it must be administered in small doses to start with. More parents should introduce their kids to the joys of museums, because the school field trips, while helpful, are sporadic. I wish I did more of that while I was a kid, because now I'm making up for lost time!

Wow! I just found this site and it is awesome. I read the Madagascar/Zoo adventure and I wish I'd found you yesterday. We went to the zoo today. City Savvy is the best because kids need to be taught geography skills at an early age. I have a degree in Geography and you won't believe how many people don't know the capital of Paraguay or even what continent it's on.
